Founded by experienced teachers in Blacksburg, VA, the Center of Love for Learning’s literacy intervention programs are research-based, multisensory, and differentiated. By developing individualized plans that identify areas of weakness, we aim to help students of all ages maximize their potential to become lifelong readers and active learners. In addition to our literacy programs, we offer other services, such as writing, English as a second language support, study skills, and foreign language classes.

Tutoring Services

  • Instruction is based on The Science of Reading, which shows that developing strong phonological awareness skills and symbol imagery are key to successful reading. We teach sounds and imagery systematically and explicitly so that students can develop successful decoding and encoding skills by building on what they already know. Our phonics instruction is also multisensory, utilizing visual, musical, and kinesthetic movements.

  • Many students struggle with reading comprehension and other language skills due to weak concept imagery. We focus on developing strong visualization skills in order to improve overall comprehension and higher order thinking. This can also help improve deficiencies in vocabulary, memory, listening comprehension, and writing.

  • We teach students of all ages how to effectively annotate, take notes, manage their time, and organize their priorities through a multisensory approach that will help develop their studying and test taking skills.

  • For ESL learners of all ages, we develop a plan based on each individual’s strengths and weaknesses in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in order to build confidence in comprehending and communicating in a second language.

  • We explicitly teach the writing process in order for students to brainstorm and organize their writing with introductions, topic sentences, and conclusions. In addition, we focus on correct sentence structures that help students to clearly express their ideas and opinions.

  • French courses are tailored and designed to suit the student’s professional, social, or educational needs, whether the skill level is beginner, intermediate, or advanced. The focus is on vocabulary, grammar, speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. We can also accommodate a small group or corporate class.

  • We are happy to accommodate a group of 3-6 students for small group reading and writing instruction at a lower rate than individual instruction. Please contact us for more information.

Who We Are

Longtime educators, Caitlin Capone, M.S. & M.A. and JC Freed, M.A, aim to minimize both students’ and their families’ academic struggles. Effective reading is the most essential skill for success inside and outside of school. Research centered around the Science of Reading concludes that students must develop not only phonemic awareness skills (letter and sound recognition) but also symbol imagery (committing letters and sounds to memory) as well as concept imagery (visualizing). Our individualized programs are designed to identify weaknesses for students of any age or learning difference and develop a plan to help them reach their full academic potential. We offer services that range from phonics instruction, reading comprehension, study skills, and ESL support. Both Caitlin and JC are passionate about everyone having the opportunity to obtain the skills they need to grow from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”.
